Hi guys! Summer is in full swing and we are enjoying the beautiful weather as well as sleeping in. This year my daughter graduated high school and has been starting to plan the next chapter of her life. Very exciting! ❤️
We have also moved recently and have so much renovation left to do in our new place. I am hoping to take this summer to get more done. There has been a lot of painting to do mostly.
We also finally got the hook ups installed for our dishwasher! It was beginning to feel like the 1930’s having to wash dishes by hand in a basin. We didn’t have a kitchen sink for a while there too!
All that to say, life has been BUSY! But summer isn’t over yet! Lately, I have had more energy to do more book editing as well as sewing and crafting for the dolls. My doll photo studio is also nearly finished being set up, although since it is summer, I am having fun finding nice spots outside in my new yard to photograph my dolls.
Everything was so up in the air during the move that it has taken quite a bit of time for me to get back into doll maker mode. I finally feel settled in enough to start tackling some of my unfinished pieces.
Today’s craft has been sitting in my unfinished project bin for quite a while. Julie’s record player! Now I do have a proper cute record player already for my dolls, but I think Julie’s handheld one is so adorable. Plus I just had this kind of wild idea on how to make one so I had to try.
Ok let’s get started!
What you Need:
Bic Wite Out EZ Correct
Paint/brush
Hot glue
Exacto blade
Toothpick
Styrofoam or thick craft foam
Craft foam black
Scrapbook paper
Tape
Let’s begin!
First, you want to open up the white out case and gut the entire thing. Keep the white disc inside.
Some of the tabs also need to be removed to make it easier to take the lid on and off. I trimmed down the peg that secures into the center hole to about 1mm but just snapped off and cleared out everything else. (Do not snap off the piece circled in yellow)
Next, remove the logo. I used very fine sandpaper and non acetone nail polish remover. Acetone would probably work even better.
I painted some flowers on mine to match the lid on Julie’s. Set aside.
Now we will make some records. Using that white disc trace a record onto black craft foam. I had this black rubber mat I wasn’t using but foam would work just as well.
Cut it out. Replace the white disc and put the black ‘record’ on top. You could add a label to your record too if you want.
Trace and cut out as many records as your doll wants. Now we will make record sleeves. You can make these from scrapbook paper.
Fold the scrapbook paper in half. Along the fold trace a square large enough to hold the record. Cut it out.
Tape along the two sides leaving the top open.
Use stickers to decorate the record sleeves.
Now back to the record player. To make the record player arm, use a piece of craft foam or styrofoam. You could also use a piece of popsicle stick if you want it even sturdier. You just have to carve the shape from it. Stick a toothpick through it.
Blunt the end of the toothpick and stick it in that peg hole that was circled in yellow in the previous pic. Make sure the toothpick is all the way down in the hole. Then clip off the excess.
Make sure your record player lid still fits on top. I had to trim the record player arm a bit. Now the arm will swivel on the toothpick so you can switch out records whenever your dolls want.
Time to make the handle for our doll record player. For this I am using hard styrofoam because there were several sturdy blocks in the box with my new dishwasher. Thick craft foam would also work for this.
Measure and cut a U shaped piece to fit the record player base.
Mark and cut a handle. Paint yellow.
I always use a toothpick to hold my projects when painting styrofoam.
Hot glue the record player base to the yellow styrofoam.
And you’re done!
